Chicory Root Instead of Coffee?

I started drinking chicory root (Cichorium intybus) several years ago, but I still look forward to each and every cup! It doesn't necessarily taste like coffee, but it has a coffee feel and aroma to it. It's dark, intense, and has a rich nutty flavor. The root is roasted to diminish the bitterness while at the same time, caramelizing the natural sugars it contains.

Inulin is a prebiotic fiber that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in our gut. Dried chicory root contains up to 98% inulin, making it a great tool for healthy digestion, potentially aiding in bowel movements. This fiber may also promote blood sugar control, and supports weight loss. Chicory also contains antioxidants and is a good source of calcium and magnesium.

While this is generally safe to consume, it may cause digestive upset in some people. If you have an allergy to Birch pollen, you may want to avoid chicory and if you are pregnant, always consult your doctor before starting any herb. If you like coffee and want to try replacing a cup here and there with a healthier alternative, chicory is a great way to go!

Enjoy!
