Anti Viral Oils to the Rescue!

ree

As an aromatherapist, I generally discourage the internal use of essential oils. Just one drop can be the equivalent of drinking up to 25 cups of herbal tea! These oils are highly concentrated, and it’s easy to use more than the body can handle. Ingesting them can shock the system, placing extra strain on the liver, which must work hard to metabolize them. At this time, there are no long-term studies showing how internal use might affect our organs, and this is also one of the ways sensitivities can develop.

That being said, there are rare occasions when I may turn to very short-term internal use for therapeutic purposes. Recently, I came down with a particularly nasty virus and woke with a throat that felt as though it were lined with razor blades. To ease the discomfort, I made a simple spray with water, adding a few drops of Tea Tree, Clove, and Thyme ct. linalol essential oils. After shaking well, I sprayed the back of my throat throughout the day. While the virus itself lingered, the pain in my throat had vanished by evening.

As the illness progressed, I noticed a heaviness settling in my chest along with a persistent cough. In response, I blended coconut oil with Tea Tree, Thyme, and Oregano essential oils for topical application. I massaged the blend onto my chest while also inhaling the aroma deeply. Essential oils are most effective when used both topically and aromatically. I reapplied the blend every few hours, and by the next morning, the heaviness had lifted and my lungs felt clear once again.

The key with essential oil use is consistency. Unlike conventional medicine, where one pill can last 6 - 8 hours, essential oils metabolize more quickly, typically remaining active for just 2 - 4 hours depending on your metabolism. Those with faster metabolisms may need to reapply more often. While this approach requires greater attentiveness, the benefits are significant: minimal side effects, effective support, and a natural synergy with the body’s own healing process.

So if you decide to use essential oils when you are ill, remember to only use them for short periods of time and only when it is absolutely necessary.

Stay Healthy! Jody
